Abstract

CHASM Technologies has developed and demonstrated novel printable carbon nanotube (CNT) inks. The novel inks use V2V™ (Viscous-2-Vanishing) Technology, a patent-pending technique, to achieve a high concentration CNT (1 g/L) ink that can be easily screen or roll printed in a single pass to achieve high conductivity. Commercial CNT inks with V2V™ technology, from SouthWest NanoTechnologies (SWeNT), have been successfully printed into patterned, conductors for a variety of applications. Ink made with V2V™ technology requires no dispersant aids or surfactants for the CNT. When dried at moderate low processing temperatures, 85oC or greater, the ink dries to essentially 100% CNT on the surface. The viscosity of the ink can be tailored in the range of 50 to 5,000 cP by using a fugitive modifier that evaporates during the drying process. Ink drying rate can also be modified for specific applications with changes to the formulation materials and ratios. In addition, CNT films made from V2V™ inks require no post-processing to achieve intrinsic performance of the starting CNT material; a significant feature compared to other CNT ink systems. The Ink technology is compatible with a variety of CNT tube types including SW, SMW, and MW. Materials used in the liquid portion of the ink are compatible with bare glass surfaces, polyester films, polycarbonate films, and on top of polymeric coatings such as PVOH, EA, and Cellulose-types of polymers. 1-pass screen-printed films of a SWCNT ink yielded resisitivities of 1000 Ohms/sq. at 80%T and 2000 Ohms/sq. at 85% on bare polyester film. This presentation will introduce the new ink technology, show performance achieved from a commercial ink using this technology and a demonstration of the ink printed into conductive films and flexible circuits.
