Abstract

The design and synthesis of functional macromolecules capable of selectively and efficiently performing a particular activity as well as supporting tissue growth is a key challenge in biology and medicine. Our lab has been focused on identifying biocataysts that can effectively react with small molecule or polymeric substrates and fabricating genetically engineered artificial protein co-polymers. The long-term goal of our research is to be able to predictably design or engineer artificial enzymes and scaffolds with the objective of transforming industrial processes and medicine through biologically inspired solutions.
